Decomposing Differences in Productivity Distributions

Research Seminar

Presented by: Patrick Schneider, Bank of England

Corporate micro-data sets provide us with a wealth of information about productivity, and its distribution, across workers and firms. When using these data to describe changes in the aggregate, researchers tend to use a limited set of off-the-shelf methods. In this ESCoE Research Seminar, Patrick Schneider discusses preliminary research which shows that these common methods fit within a much broader framework for decomposing differences in distributions. This expands the researcher’s toolkit, as demonstrated through applications to growth in UK productivity since 2003 and the difference in productivity between London and the rest of the UK.

Patrick Schneider is an economist at the Bank of England, working in the Structural Economic Analysis Division. His work covers a range of real economy issues including trade and productivity. He holds degrees from Oxford and the University of New South Wales.
