The Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) will hold its annual conference, organised in partnership with the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), on 21-23 May 2025 at King’s Business School, King’s College London.
The conference is free to attend and will be held in person.
Keynote speakers include:
- Erik Brynjolfsson (Professor and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI and Director of Stanford Digital Economy Lab)
- Carol Propper (Professor of Economics at Imperial College Business School)
- Sébastien Roux (Director of the Augmented National Accounts programme at Insee)
Join us for discussions on recent research advances in economic measurement and statistics.
Nesta will also run a pre-conference workshop at King’s Business School on 20 May. This will cover data visualisation and data labelling for machine learning applications.
The programme includes papers on many aspects of the measurement and use of economic statistics, focusing on:
- Inclusive wealth measures and looking beyond GDP
- Net-zero, climate change and the environment
- National Accounts, including price measurement
- Globalisation
- Productivity and innovation, including public sector productivity
- Developing methodologies for new data sources
- Labour markets, households and inequality
- Subnational statistics
- Communicating and valuing economic statistics

Dr. Erik Brynjolfsson is the Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Professor and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI), and Director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. He is the Ralph Landau Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and holds appointments at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Stanford Department of Economics, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Carol Propper is Professor of Economics at Imperial College Business School in the Department of Economics and Public Policy. Carol was made a Dame in the 2021 New Year Honours in recognition of her public services to health and economics. Her research focuses on the quality of health care delivery and health system productivity and, more broadly, on the design and consequences of incentives for the quality of public services. She was Vice Dean for Faculty and Research at Imperial Business School 2016-19, Co-Director of the Centre for Market and Public Organisation at the University of Bristol 1998-2009 and of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Exclusion at London School of Economics 1997-2007. From 2016 she has been Deputy Editor of VOX EU. She is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences and an International Fellow of the National Academy of Medicine and a past President of the Royal Economic Society. 
Sébastien Roux is the director of the Augmented National Accounts programme at Insee (the French national statistical institute). In line with beyond GDP approaches, this programme consists of incorporating new dimensions into national accounts, starting with inequalities and climate, aiming to propose new synthetic indicators that complement GDP in these dimensions. He is also an Associated Researcher at Crest. He was previously the Head of Department of Economic Studies at Insee, and has alternatively held administrative positions in the French administration (Insee and Ministry of Labour) and academic positions (Crest and Banque de France). His main research fields are labour economics and applied microeconometrics. He has published in journals like the Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, the Journal of Labour Economics, and the Economic Journal.
