Measuring the green economy

Webinar

Thursday 27 November 2025, 12:00 — 13:00

Presented by Will McDowall, UCL and ESCoE

How should we define and measure the “green economy”?

Current definitions underpinning estimates of “environmental goods and services” are often outdated and conceptually inconsistent. In key areas such as the circular economy and sustainable transport, genuinely green activities have been overlooked. Meanwhile, some technologies no longer considered green continue to be counted in estimates of green output and jobs.

In this webinar, Will McDowall will present a new approach to defining green economic activities and share data showing that current estimates exclude large parts of the green economy. The session will also explore innovative ways to measure green activities, including the potential and limitations of emerging data sources such as web-scraped datasets.
