Wage and Employment Dynamics Research Development Workshop: Sheffield

Workshop

Monday 21 November 2022, 09:00 — 13:30

University of Sheffield, Inox, Level 5, Students' Union Building, Durham Road, Sheffield S10 2TG

Registration is now closed. A blog about the event can be found here.

The Wage and Employment Dynamics project (WED) has constructed an ‘enriched’ version of the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), as well as linking this to the Census 2011 (ASHE-Census2011). These datasets are now available for researchers to use through the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service (SRS). Future datasets from the same project will include links from ASHE to HMRC datasets (employment and self-employed earnings, and migration data).

WED was funded by the ESRC through Administrative Data Research UK (ADR UK). ESRC is keen to maximise its investment in these datasets, particularly in policy-relevant research. It is running Fellowship and PhD programmes targeted at use of the ADR UK datasets; there are also ongoing research funding opportunities (such as the Secondary Data Analysis Initiative (SDAI) and the ESRC policy fellowships – UKRI), which would be suitable vehicles to seek funding for research on these datasets.

The aim of the workshops is to bring academics and policymakers together to explore potential research areas of interest using the new WED datasets. Through exercises and facilitated discussions, the aim is to stimulate research ideas and identify areas of common interest between attendees. The discussion groups will also seek to identify potential funding routes for different types of research project.

Two free of charge workshops will be run, the first on 21 November 2022 in Sheffield at the University of Sheffield and the second on 2 December 2022 in London at the Bank of England. Each event will be limited to a maximum of 30 participants. Delegates will receive confirmation of their place at least seven days in advance of the event. If oversubscribed, delegates who were unable to attend will be sent a summary report and invited to any future events.
