Join ESCoE and The Productivity Institute for a National Productivity Week panel discussion that brings together leading experts in healthcare productivity, research, analysis and policymaking.
The event will take place on Thursday 30 April, from 18:00 – 20:30 at King’s College London, and will include a drinks reception and networking.
The NHS is one of the UK’s most important yet most pressured public institutions. Improving productivity is essential for both patient outcomes and long‑term sustainability. New technologies such as AI and remote monitoring offer significant potential, but structural underinvestment and a weak innovation culture continue to constrain progress. Productivity has still not returned to pre‑pandemic levels and appears to be lagging behind other countries. Large differences across NHS organisations highlight the need to understand the sources of variation and help lower‑performing providers catch up with best practice.
Join us for a timely and forward‑looking panel discussion that brings together leading experts working at the forefront of healthcare productivity research, analysis and policymaking.
Panellists:
- Tera Allas – Honorary Professor, Alliance Manchester Business School; Co‑Chair, NHS Productivity Commission
- Max Warner – Institute for Fiscal Studies
- Katherine Kent – Office for National Statistics
- Paul Healy – NHS England
Chair:
- Professor Mary O’Mahony – King’s College London, Research Director, The Productivity Institute and ESCoE
Together, they will explore:
- Why has NHS productivity not recovered to pre‑COVID trajectories?
- How has the measurement of health care productivity improved, and what are the remaining challenges?
- Why has performance varied so widely across NHS organisations?
- How can innovation, workforce transformation, and data help unlock substantial productivity gains?
- What reforms are needed now to build a more responsive, resilient and sustainable NHS for the future?
