ONS publishes new, modelled estimates of growth across the UK’s nations and regions using ESCoE’s ‘regional nowcasting’ approach

Topic:

Nowcasting

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) have today published model-based early estimates of regional gross value added in the regions of England and Wales to Quarter 2 (April to June) 2021. These experimental estimates, provided for the nine English regions and Wales, are produced using the econometric model created as part of our ESCoE project ‘Regional Nowcasting in the UK’.

This is the first publication of these estimates by the ONS. These figures are still being developed, with improvements planned in the future, and are highly experimental, but they provide useful information and are an important milestone in ONS’ plans to transform local and regional statistics. They are inviting users’ views on their uses and needs for these data, and are welcoming feedback at regionalgdp@ons.gov.uk.
